Long pendant necklaces have been very in style the last couple of years. Whenever I go into a trendy boutique, the displays always have several of these necklaces layered over bohemian chic clothing. I decided I had better make one myself! You can use any large gemstone, your choice of chain and charm. I like the antique brass finish the best. This project is really quick and easy, but turns out very elegant!
All the supplies you need! And you just need some basic tools to assemble the necklaces!
Supplies I used to make these necklaces:
- Antique brass leaf charm
- 20 gauge Gunmetal Artistic Wire
- Antique brass cable chain, I used #40-099-16-6
- Large gemstone bead, I used Birdseye Rhyolite
- Basic Tool Kit
Now follow these simple steps:
Cut the wire about 2 feet long.
Make a large loop on one end of the wire with your round nose pliers. Leave about 3 inches of wire for wrapping.
Add the antique brass leaf to the loop.
Wrap the short piece of wire around the long wire, making about 5 coils. Trim the excess wire with wire cutters and tuck any tail of wire with your chain nose pliers.
Add your gemstone bead on the wire.
Cut the chain your desired length. I made mine a little over 30 inches.
I like to place the chain directly onto the wire, so I don’t need to use jump rings. To do this, make a loop with the wire on the other side of the gemstone. Before you secure the loop, string onto each end of your chain.
Make a wrapped loop with the wire, wrapping 4 or 5 coils until you get to the base of the gemstone.
Wrap the remaining wire around the gemstone itself for a decorative touch. Then when you get to the bottom, wrap the wire securely over the top of the other wire coil.
Trim the wire, and tuck it with your chain nose pliers so there is no pointy edge sticking out. That’s it! You don’t need to add a clasp, because the chain is long enough to place over your head.
