A showroom customer asked about the price of amethyst, particularly the “A” grade amethyst we carry. We had not noticed the recent price of this, so we asked our supplier who specializes in amethyst.
She told us,
“Yes, Amethyst rough has kept increasing for the last two-three years. For the same price, we won’t be able to get the same quality rough. Since last year, I notice vendors in [market shops] are now selling the “A” grade amethyst by grams, just like peridot and aqua.”
So take a tip:
- Any A-grade amethyst you already have is likely to appreciate in value.
- The lab-grown synthetic amethyst is a great substitute option. Impress your customers with a less expensive bead that has very good color. (Read about the properties of lab-grown amethyst.)
FYI for all birthstone / purple lovers. Don’t wait till you’re old to get hold of genuine amethyst beads, if they’re your thing!

thanks for the tip! I have a few pieces of grade A, time to get more…
Kind of interesting to get these reports about the prices of things that we make jewelry out of. You hear more about silver & gold, so it’s neat to get a peek into gemstone world!
By the way, thanks to everyone on Twitter who talked about enjoying this post. I do believe a lot of blog readers do drive-bys, LOL!
As a Valentine’s baby, I guess I should grab some of the good stuff while I can!
Made off with a fine haul of A grade stuff today at the Tour!
Dawno, your post about your tour stop is just great! I cannot wait until the end of October when they come to Vegas! Thanks for sharing – and wow, what a beautiful pile of shinies you got!
Thank you joia – I’m glad you enjoyed my little travelogue 😀
I am so glad to see this. Sometimes it seems that amethyst is the underdog of the semi precious gems, being passed over for other beauties. I contribute this to not seeing many styles in amethyst beads – I rarely see faceted or briolete amethyst beads at shows.
I am counting down the days till June when ya’all are in town and I can get my hands on some of these!
Though I have several strands of genuine amethyst in my supply stash, my favorite by far is a strand of Rings & Things lab-grown amethyst. The rich deep color is breath taking and the faceting of the large 10 mm beads create unbelievable sparkle. When I received the strand, with every intention of creating a sellable piece, I fell instantly in love and couldn’t bear parting with it…now it’s part of my own private collection. 🙂
