Jewelry Making Tutorial July Birthstone Necklace

June 21, 2019

You don’t have to be able to afford genuine rubies to make birthstone jewelry for July. Swarovski’s ruby crystals offer high-end quality and beauty without a high-end price. This project combines the Swarovski 22mm pear pendant with 2mm Greek leather cord for a casual-but-classy necklace. Here are the steps to make your own:

Here are the suggested supplies:

You will need these tools:

Add a jump-ring bail to the crystal pendant. Twist open the 8mm jump ring, string on the crystal pear pendant and the heart charm, then close the jump ring.

Measure and then cut the leather cord to your desired length (we made ours 17″). The Greek leather cord is dense, so semi-flush side cutters are the perfect cutting tool.

String four large-hole silver-filled beads onto the leather cord.

String the finished pendant onto the leather cord.

String the remaining four large-hole silver-filled beads onto the leather cord.

Center the pendant and beads on the length of leather cord.

Insert one end of the leather cord into a center-crimp tube. The ends of the cording should match the top rim of the center crimp tube. Use chain-nose pliers to securely crimp the center of the tube. Flip the piece and crimp from the other side of the tube.

Center-crimp cord ends are the perfect finish for leather cord; they are easy to use, attractive, and provide a secure finish.

Repeat the previous steps to add a center-crimp with loop finding to the other leather necklace end.

Use a 5mm jump ring to attach the lobster clasp to one necklace end loop.

Attach a 5mm jump ring to the necklace’s other end loop. This ring will receive the lobster clasp.
